Recycling Information

GREAT NEWS! We have expanded what can be accepted at our Recycling Igloo Location behind the Dunkin Donuts. Instead of source separating your glass and aluminum, you can now place them in one container along with:

Household products containing toxic chemicals like pesticide, oil-based paint, weed killers, auto batteries, anti freeze, and some home cleaners, can be a threat to the environment if improperly discarded. Never throw away these things in the trash. They could harm the sanitation workers or result in fires in the collection vehicles. It is also not safe to pour these items down your drain or sewers. These products should be taken to the nearest waste collection station. For a list of area stations please visit www.co.delaware.pa.us/recycle .
Medical Waste Disposal: Medications being used for the treatment of Cancer, Leukemia, Diabetes, etc by people or their pets, as well as hypodermic needles, should be disposed of properly. These items are not allowed in the regular trash pick-up. Please consult your doctor for the safest way to dispose of these items.
The Recycling committee and Borough Council have placed the recycling Igloos on Houston Road next to the PECO Property (behind the Dunkin Donuts).
Newspaper curb pickup are the first and third Wednesday of each month. Papers cannot be put out in plastic bags, they must be in paperbags, cardboard boxes or bound together with rope. All kinds of paper products that are not "Glossy" can be recycled. Cardboard, Newspapers, circulars etc.
You can always check the borough calendar for dates as well.
Don't forget you can help out more with recycling and environment issues by being proactive yourself.
- Bring your own bags. You can buy fabric or thick platic/fiber bags (think Ikea bags for the plastic fiber mix). This way you can accomplish several things:
- Using less plastic or paper causes less trash. Less trash, means less trash pickup, means lower trash pickup bills.
- If the stores don't need bags it reduces trash and then costs. Those bags cost money and some places charge for them now
- Comfort of having bags that fit your personal needs and style. Some people want small, easy to carry bags, some people want large tough bags to carrying everything together. Having your own style and size it great because, how many times has your handle riped off your bag and been annoying or even causing the loss of items. A bag of your choosing will mean you can get the handles that work for you.
- DISPOSE OF USED PAINT RESPONSIBLY:
- Oil based paints are not to be disposed of in the trash. Oil-based paints are considered Hazardous Household Waste. These should be disposed of at one of the HHW Events in the area.
- Bucks, Chester, Delaware, Montgomery & Philadelphia are working together to rid the environment of HHW. If Delaware County’s dates are not convenient, you may participate in any of the above counties’ collection events. For additional dates & information Call: PA DEP Recycling Hotline (800) 346-4242 Internet: www.co.delaware.pa.us/recycle
- Oil-based paints may be mixed together to be used again. DO NOT MIX OIL-BASED PAINT WITH LATEX PAINT.
- Latex Paint is not hazardous waste! This water-based paint is a safer substitute for oil-based paint. Latex Paint is not accepted at a hazardous waste collection event. It should be solidified before placing out with your trash.
Easy Instructions:
1) Simply, take the top off the paint can, place it outside, away from children and pets and allow it to harden.
2) If the can is very full, take a cardboard box, line it with a heavy-duty trash bag.
3) Inside the bag place a clay-based kitty litter, then add paint.
4) Stir with a stick until all the paint is ab- sorbed. If it’s still runny, add shredded newspaper. Place all lids in this bag.
5) When the paint is solidified, baggy tie and place out with your trash, box and all.
6) Empty paint cans should be placed out for your regular trash in a separate box.
7) Make sure that all lids are removed. - Old Latex Paints can be blended together to produce beige or gray.
REDUCE Buy only what you need and return unopened cans. If you are at the end of a job and realize you need only a small amount to finish, exchange the unopened can for a quart.
REUSE Use leftovers for second coats, touch-ups, painting fences, bird houses, basements, give to a friend, neighbor or small business owner, etc., OR – donate left-over paint to a community group, school, local theater group, recreation department, sign painter, etc.Have some ideas, web links, want to help in some way?
